If you didn’t know the name Brandon Gill before this week, commit it to memory now.
Freshman Congressman Brandon Gill (R-TX) put on a clinic this past week in holding so-called “experts” accountable during a pair of House Oversight subcommittee hearings. In an era where political theater often takes precedence over substance, Gill stood out by using direct questions, sharp logic, and an utter refusal to accept fumbling word salads as an answer.
The result? He exposed more than just bad policy—he revealed the buffoonery hiding behind it.
Gill Scrutinizes DEI “Expert”
In his first showcase, Rep. Gill confronted Dr. Shaun Harper, a Provost Professor in the USC Rossier School of Education. His research focuses primarily on racial and gender equity and inclusion. Gill began by establishing that Dr. Harper that he previously published an article expressing concerns that criticism of President Joe Biden’s age were rooted in ageism—a form of bigotry.
Gill pressed Harper on this premise, asking if all concerns about Biden’s age were inherently bigoted. This sent Dr. Harper into a bit of a tizzy, as he simultaneously insisted that all ageism is bigotry—but that people criticizing the aging president were not themselves bigots. When Gill asked how he squared his two statements, Dr. Harper, caught between defending his academic framing and sounding reasonable to the public, squirmed his way into rhetorical contradiction as he attempted to dodge, dip, duck, dive and… dodge Gill’s follow-ups.

Gill wasn’t having it the “agenda gymnastics.” And neither should we.
But Gill didn’t stop there. He pivoted to investigating Harper’s views on race-based diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies. With surgical precision, Gill distilled Harper’s convoluted academic jargon into the plain takeaway: Harper believes race should factor into hiring decisions—and that preference should favor certain minority groups, implicitly at the expense of white applicants.
Gill’s questioning was simple and direct; he refused to allow Harper to hide behind roundabout statements about race, prompting Gill to cut through the spin and demand simple yes-or-no answers. The result was a revealing moment of ideological dishonesty, one Harper seemed desperate to avoid admitting out loud.

The Moment Gill Derailed an Anti-DOGE “Expert”
Later in the week, Gill showed up to another subcommittee—this one reviewing cuts made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)—and took aim at Emily Devito, a left-leaning economic policy “expert.” Devito seemed less prepared than Dr. Harper as she chose to repeat a pat answer to all of Rep. Gill’s questioning.
Devito insisted on the importance of funding all government research generally, but when Gill cited specific examples of grants which DOGE cut, Devito floundered.
Time and again, Gill asked whether particular projects were a good use of taxpayer dollars. Time and again, Devito dodged—because she had no clue what the grants actually funded. Her default defense was that all government research is essential.
The project themselves were not even close calls. They included
- • A $1.5 million NIH grant to Morehouse College for the “Center to Advance Reproductive Justice and Behavioral Health among Black Pregnant/Postpartum Women and Birthing People.”
- • An NIH study adapting an LGBT+ teen pregnancy program specifically for transgender boys.
Gill exposed that for what it is: a blanket ideology of endless spending on pet left-leaning programs dressed up as support for medical research.
Gill Is a New Republican Star on the Rise
Rep. Brandon Gill is proving himself to be more than a freshman lawmaker—he’s emerging as a legitimate star in the fight against performative policy and bureaucratic bluster in the same vein as seasoned buffoon slayers like Sen. John Kennedy. In just one week, Gill demonstrated the value of sharp questioning, preparation, and the power of exposing buffoonery with logic and poise.
We need more of that in Washington. A lot more.
