In a rare show of bipartisan unity, NYC Democratic and Republican mayoral candidates joined with grieving families affected by disgraced former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo ‘s disastrous COVID-19 nursing home policies in an effort to persuade voters to stop Cuomo’s political reemergence.
Partisans Join Forces Against Cuomo
This past weekend, grieving families who experienced the loss of a loved one resulting Andrew Cuomo’s infamous order affecting nursing homes organized a press conference featuring mayoral candidates spanning the political spectrum to mark the fifth anniversary of Cuomo’s decision mandating that nursing homes accept COVID-positive patients without further testing.
As is well documented, Cuomo’s policy had catastrophic consequences, leading to thousands of unnecessary deaths among the most vulnerable. Despite this, Cuomo has refused to take responsibility or acknowledge his missteps.
The candidates joined grieving families in their opposition to Cuomo’s handling of the pandemic and his new bid for political power.
Cuomo’s Selective Memory on COVID Failures
In his mayoral campaign launch speech, Cuomo painted himself as a fearless leader who guided New York through the worst of the pandemic. Yet he seems to conveniently forget significant details.
For instance, Cuomo claims that he alone led the Empire State through the pandemic. But, reality tells a different story. Early in the crisis, Cuomo openly praised the Trump administration’s support, acknowledging federal assistance in setting up overflow medical facilities such as the Javits Center and the USS Comfort hospital ship.
Cuomo also conveniently forgot his since-rescinded Emmy award, and selectively omits his multimillion dollar book deal he secured during the pandemic, which HarperCollins subsequently canceled.
A clip from Fox 5 New York further illustrates Cuomo’s refusal to own up to his mistakes. When pressed about the nursing home order, he sidestepped the question, insisting that experts at the time didn’t fully understand COVID-19. This excuse doesn’t hold up (isn’t it common sense that our elder population are highly susceptible to contagions?) especially considering that safer options, like the aforementioned overflow facilities, were readily available. Instead, political optics and Cuomo’s craven nature took priority over common sense, and thousands paid the price.
Curtis Sliwa Pulled No Punches Against Cuomo
At the press conference, Curtis Sliwa, a Republican mayoral candidate and Guardian Angels founder, didn’t hold back. Calling Cuomo a “murderer” for his pandemic policies, Sliwa stated unequivocally that the disgraced former governor should never hold office again, and holds his supporters equally responsible.
If you are going to forgive this man who has the blood on his hands of 15,000, if not more, every time you shake Andrew Cuomo’s hand and you forgive him and you endorse him for mayor, wipe the blood of the dead off his hand.
Other Democratic candidates echoed Sliwa’s sentiments:
Why Isn’t Cuomo’s Comeback DOA?
We’ve covered Andrew Cuomo extensively on our YouTube channel (you’re subscribed, right?) as well as right here during the pandemic. He’s also our “cover boy” for Gene’s book, Schnooks, Crooks, Liars & Scoundrels as the “Radioactive” buffoon. Suffice to say, we know from whence we speak about Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo’s attempt to rebrand himself as a leader fit for public office is an insult to New Yorkers who lived through the consequences of his failed leadership. He ignored warnings, disregarded common sense, dismissed accountability, and placed political gamesmanship over public safety. If Cuomo truly cared about the people, he should acknowledge his mistakes and step away from the spotlight—not attempt to reclaim power.
