Dems DOUBLE DOWN On FAILED J6 Narrative

Remember When “Democracy Was On The Ballot?”

The January 6th Capitol riot remains a flashpoint in American politics, especially for those on the political left who want to double down on their failed narrative. As we look back four years later, the debate surrounding it continues to divide the nation along political lines. Gene Berardelli dives into the intense political discourse in the wake of the 2024 elections. While extreme Buffoons on the left like The View’s Sunny Hostin urge us to “never forget” the atrocities, thought leaders on the right, like CNN’s Scott Jennings want you to “read the room” and recognize that t’s time to move on.

But what do the numbers say? And how do they influence our perceptions of this monumental day in history?

Let’s explore the ongoing struggle for memory and meaning post-January 6th in our new political climate post-election.

Joe Biden Calls for an “Unrelenting Effort” To Remember January 6th

Recently, President Joe Biden submitted an op-ed to The Washington Post, where he calls for Americans to “remember January 6th” every year, emphasizing that “any nation that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it.” While this may sound noble to some, a significant segment of the nation questions whether the emphasis on January 6th has been dragged out for too long, contributing to a political divide that seems more about scoring points than actually learning from history.

As the 2024 election has been brought to a close with Vice President Kamala Harris’s certification of President Donald Trump’s historic and resounding victory, the debate over the importance of January 6th has only intensified on the left as a vector of attack on Trump. Democrats continue to cling to the emotional impact of the event, positioning it as one of the worst chapters in American history. But, even within the Democratic Party, there are those who argue it’s time to let go and stop weaponizing the January 6th narrative.

“An Atrocity” On the Level Of… Slavery?

The View’s Sunny Hostin argued recently that January 6th should never be forgotten, equating it with historical atrocities like World War II, the Holocaust, or slavery. Such outlandish comparisons undermine the significance of those historical tragedies, turning to exaggeration of this national event into a political tool to sway emotions.

Gene Berardelli talks about this in his book, Schnooks, Crooks, Liars & Scoundrels, as a trait of a political buffoon he identified as “The Hot Mess.” This particular category of Buffoon seeks to rouse anger, fear, and other powerful emotions to convince others to follow their call to action. Often, these Buffoons allow such intense emotion to overrule logic, and, ultimately, weaken their position and standing in the political discourse of the day. IN this case, Hostin’s exaggeration is detrimental to her position, as her overreach emphasizes the weakness of her opinion, not its strength.

The Numbers Show a Shift of Blame Away from Trump for January 6th

Beyond feelings and emotion, the data shows that public opinion towards Donald Trump and his involvement in January 6th has eased significantly. Initially, the widespread belief was that Trump was directly and greatly responsible for the events of that day. But as more information came to light through the years, including details about Nancy Pelosi’s refusal to request National Guard troops and other controversies surrounding the January 6th Committee’s actions, public perception of Trump’s role has softened.

According to CNN’s Harry Enten, while 56% of Americans believed that Trump’s actions on January 6th should have made him ineligible for the presidency back in 2020, by 2023 that figure had dropped to 47%. The data also shows that only 5% of Americans consider the Capitol riot their most significant memory of Trump’s first term. Among Republicans, this number drops even further to just 2%. This shift suggests that, over time, Americans have reconsidered their initial reactions and, as more evidence emerged, they began to see the situation in a different light. By the 2024 election, fewer Americans viewed him as significantly responsible for the Capitol riot, with the majority now focused on issues like the economy, inflation, and national security instead.

This change in opinion reflects a desire to move beyond past grievances and focus on more pressing issues, as suggested by CNN’s Scott Jennings. He recently explained that the American people made their choice through the election, and despite the left’s hyper-focus on January 6th, the people’s dissatisfaction with the Biden administration’s handling of key issues like inflation and national security pushed voters to reconsider Trump. This shift in sentiment was crucial in Trump’s return to office.

Not All Dems Want to Keep Harping on January 6th

Despite the continued attempts of many on the left to focus on January 6th, not everyone is on board. The crew over at Pod Save America argue that President Biden’s op-ed is a “perfect encapsulation of how feckless everything feels in this moment.” In calling for their colleagues to move on, co-host Jon Lovett even called Biden “stubborn like an old man” for pushing his “unrelenting effort” to remember January 6th.

Final Thoughts

The 2024 election results speak for themselves: voters decided that they preferred Trump over the alternative, even as the left tried to suppress his political comeback by all means necessary. This speaks to a broader disillusionment with the direction of the country under the Biden administration and a desire for change.
