CNN’s Anderson Cooper Lashes Out at Guest on Live TV

Don’t Be A WHAT?!?

Anderson Cooper lost his cool on live TV during a heated exchange with former Gov. Chris Sununu over Trump, Musk and DOGE

A heated exchange between CNN’s Anderson Cooper and former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu is the latest on-air incident to spark debate about media double standards, political disruption, and the challenges of government transparency. Cooper is the latest high-profile left leaning figure to lose control publicly while discussing both Elon Musk and President Donald Trump

The Heated Exchange: Anderson Cooper vs. Chris Sununu

Let’s set the context for the moment: Anderson Cooper hosted a panel on his AC360 show on CNN discussing their reaction to the latest press conference in the Oval Office involving President Donald Trump and his “special” federal employee, Elon Musk. Musk is spearheading federal audits and rooting out government waste via his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which has caused many Democrats, including Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY),  to react with emotional hostility and skepticism.

Former Gov. Sununu touched on several allegations uncovered by DOGE and discussed at the latest Oval Office presser, including:

  • A 150-year-old allegedly still receiving welfare benefits, and
  • A government contractor who continued receiving payments from the federal government decades after their contract ended.

These discoveries join past allegations of taxpayer dollars going toward Moroccan pottery classes, and a transgender musical in Ireland, among other things.

During the CNN panel, Anderson Cooper questioned the credibility of Trump and Musk’s claims about government waste and partisan corruption, citing the lack of any documentary evidence provided by either. Sununu defended the administration’s transparency in its first 23 days of existence, arguing that investigations take time. Also, Sununu stated that both Musk and Trump’s statements carry the gravitas of the office of the President, and both deserve the benefit of the doubt.

Cooper and others ignored the fact that federal courts have already halted some of DOGE’s efforts, making document production problematic.

Sununu pressed whether Cooper would tolerate the discovery of $56 million dollars allocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toward housing migrants in “luxury” hotels. This is where Cooper snapped at Sununu with the now-viral remark: “don’t be a dick.”

Though Cooper later apologized, the incident highlights the growing tensions on the left surrounding the Trump-Musk alliance.

Trump, Musk, and Political Disruption

As we have been discussing previously here, Donald Trump and Elon Musk have shaken up Washington in the early weeks of Trump’s second presidency, disrupting the status quo. Both the left and mainstream media figures like Cooper rely on Washington’s entrenched bureaucracy – what many call “The Swamp” – to maintain control over both narrative and government action. Trump’s aggressive push for transparency threatens that power structure.

But, with Musk’s independent wealth and Trump’s political influence, they represent a formidable challenge to the system—one that no amount of media spin or emotional outbursts can easily suppress.

The Catch-22 Set Up Against the President

Seemingly, the left and its media allies like Anderson Cooper seek to hold Trump and Musk to an unfair standard. First, we should note that previous administrations were not subjected to the same level of immediate scrutiny that this second trump administration has faced a month into Trump’s term. While this is surely a product of Trump’s well-documented animus with both the political left and the mainstream media, there also exists a new wrinkle set up by the media. Cooper and others have called for proof and transparency all while knowing that many actions by Musk’s DOGE are the subject of restraining orders and future “lawfare” initiated by Trump opponents. This situation presents a classic Catch-22—demanding proof while blocking the ability to collect it.

Your Turn: Is Political Disruption a Good Thing?

Feel free to weigh in on the debate: will Trump and Musk’s efforts lead to real reform, or is this just another political spectacle? The battle over who will shape public perception is just beginning—and it won’t end anytime soon.
